Altering pant length- the correct length for your pants when getting them tailored.

The correct pant length is dependent on two things- the heel height of the shoe you will wear with them, and the width of the pant leg at the hem. 

For men’s pants, it is pretty cut and dry- the pant should end at the top of the shoe heel in back, which will cause a small break in the front on the top of the shoe. 

Women have much more variation in not only heel heights of their shoes, but in the width of the pant leg at the hem.  Narrow pant legs will need to be much shorter than wide leg pants, because the pant will not fall over the foot as much, if at all.  Making narrow pants too long will just cause them to bunch at the ankle.  Narrow pants are more easily adaptable to shoes with different heel heights.

Wide leg pants are not as adaptable.  If you tailor a wide leg pant to a high heel, it will not be possible to wear them with low heels without them dragging on the ground. And the wider the leg, the longer they should be.
